Gumroad alternative for software, license keys and crypto checkout
Gumroad and Skalp are both merchants of record. Gumroad has handled sales tax and VAT on its sales since 1 January 2025, and Skalp does the same on every order. Where they differ is who they are built for. Gumroad grew up around creators who sell e-books, courses and memberships to their followers. Skalp is built for people who sell software, scripts and license keys, and whose buyers want to pay with crypto or a local method.
When Skalp is the better fit
- You sell software and want your app to check every key, with a limit on how many machines it runs on.
- Your buyers want to pay with crypto, with BLIK in Poland or with Pix in Brazil.
- You want your payouts in a bank account or a USDT wallet.
- You sell into a game community and need scripts protected at upload, a Discord role for every buyer, or a store for your game server.
- You sell from your own app and want an API with SDKs for Node and Go.
When Gumroad is the better fit
If your audience follows you for writing, art or courses, Gumroad's Discover marketplace and creator tools are made for that. Skalp has a marketplace too, but it leans towards software, scripts and game assets.
License keys
Both platforms can issue a license key for each sale. On Skalp the key belongs to the order, so a refund or a lost chargeback revokes it, and a key sold with a subscription stops working when the plan ends. You set a device limit and a duration per product. Your app checks the key with one API call, and the answer comes with a code such as EXPIRED or DEVICE_LIMIT_REACHED. Code examples in Node and Go.
Checkout and payouts
Buyers on Skalp pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, a local method or crypto. Buyers in Poland, the euro area, the US and Brazil see prices in their own currency, and you can set a round local price in up to three currencies. The VAT for the buyer's country is added on top of your net price.
Each order clears 7 days after it completes. Then you request a payout to a bank account in 40+ countries or to a USDT (TRC-20) wallet. Gumroad pays out by direct deposit or PayPal, depending on the country.
Fees
Opening a store on Skalp is free. Skalp keeps 10% of each sale, or 7% once your sales over the last 30 days pass $20,000. Payment processing is included and there is no monthly fee. Gumroad lists its own rates on its pricing page, so compare what you keep per sale once processing and payout costs are counted.
Moving from Gumroad
- Open a store and fill in the seller file: your details, a tax form and the Supplier Agreement. An admin reviews it within 2 business days.
- Recreate your products and upload the same files. Keys you issued yourself go into a key pool, one per line.
- If your app checks Gumroad keys, add the Skalp check for new buyers and keep the old one for existing buyers.
- Update the links in your bio, emails and website, or point your own domain at the store.

Can I sell memberships and subscriptions?
Yes. Any product can be a weekly, monthly or yearly plan, with a trial of up to 14 days and coupons that apply to the first payment, a set number of months or the whole plan.
